| ((The Cullens and Bella are gone, leaving behind a confused Charlie and a grieving Jake. Gradually the people of Forks forget the oddities of the Cullens and return to their normal lives. No new wolves are created, and things settle down. One night, though, an all too familiar scent travels through the town, the scent of vampires. Jake, hoping beyond hope that his Bella has returned to him, rushes out, and finds, not the Cullens, but other vampires, strangers...)) _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa... | Val's POVValentine Tower watched from the safety of a tree as the wolf and the vampire fought together. The vampire darted away, leaving a trail for the wolf, who looked at it oddly, then took the bait. Val shook her head. The wolf really didn't know what he was getting in to, did he? She hopped down and made her own way cautiously towards the wolf's home. Others began coming out, all wolves, all glowering warily at her. One, a tall, commanding one, snarled. She stopped moving. "What are you doing here?" he demanded, his voice thick with hatred and wariness. "I've come to live," Val answered clearly, meeting the wolf's eyes squarely. "I was hoping we might come to some kind of agreement." "We don't talk with leeches," one of the other wolves burst out. The entourage shouted their agreement until the leader turned to snap at them. They quieted instantly, and the leader turned back to Val. "Why should we trust you?" he demanded. "We have no reason to agree with you or any of your kind." "Only mutual survival," Val corrected. "I'm not alone, and we are strong. You could not fight us without losing members of your pack, just as we could not fight you without severely weakening ourselves. As neither of us wish that outcome, we must negotiate first." The wolf looked at her oddly, his eyes flicking across her face. She said nothing, not moving, praying that he wouldn't realize she was lying. She hadn't always been alone, true, but her sister had left her earlier in the year, staying behind with the human man she had fallen in love with. Val was on her own. Finally, he grunted. "You remind me of another leech, who offered the same terms. You and he have the same personality." Val, not sure if it was a compliment or not, said nothing. "What are your conditions?" the leader demanded. "You let us stay here, in the town, not on your land, and we don't hunt humans. We keep your existence secret, just as you do not tell about us, and we do not fight." The wolf nodded. "One more condition," he warned. "What?" "You have no contact with my pack. Your kind has brought nothing but trouble to us in the past, and we want nothing more to do with you." Val nodded. "Agreed." She turned and walked away, weak with relief. She hadn't been sure that her negotiations would be effective. _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa... | Paul's POVI watched as the leech slunk away, barely able to contain my anger. I'd thought we were done with them forever after the last batch left, taking most of Jake's heart with them. My hands curled into fists at the thought, and I felt my vision begin to blur. In a flash, Jared was by my side, his nails digging into my shoulder. "Breathe," he ordered roughly, drawing blood. "Sam won't like it if you lose control now." Slowly, I obeyed, my vision returning and my hands steadying again. Jared didn't let go, and I twisted to look at him. "You can stop now," I told him. "I won't lose it." "You sure?" "Yeah." Reluctantly, he let go, obviously wary of my truthfulness. When I didn't instantly sprint off after the leech, he relaxed visibly. Sam looked hard at me, not saying anything. He didn't need to. I knew what he was thinking just as clearly as though I were linked with him. He wasn't happy. I ducked my head in apology, and he nodded once. Then he turned and melted back into the forest, the rest of us following him. Without quite knowing why I did so, I turned one last time to look back at where the leech had been, unable to quite banish the sight of red hair fluttering in the light breeze. _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa... | Val's POVShe walked slowly away from the dogs, wondering what to do now. They'd allowed her to stay, but that didn't mean she had any place to stay. She knew no one, nor did she want to, and, while that cut back on accidental slips, it meant that she had no one on who's door to knock. With a sigh, she resigned herself to spending the night outside until she could find a house to rent. She found herself a comfortable tree and leaned back, bracing herself against the rough bark in an effort to settle down. It wasn't that she needed to sleep, indeed, she couldn't sleep, but it was nice to be able to relax. She had no idea how much time had passed until she came out of her trance again. She'd discovered that, while she couldn't sleep, it was possible for her to tune out of the world, coming as close to true slumber as was possible for a vampire. Unfortunately, this semi-cationic state dulled her senses to such an extent that she completely missed the signs marking someone's coming. Only at the sound of another voice did she stir, and even then, she did it reluctantly. "Val? Val, can you hear me?" Val blinked and struggled to return to her previous state of alertness, wondering who the voice belonged to. It sounded like it should be familiar, like she knew it well. In fact, it sounded like... "Syena?" It was. The girl nodded, sinking down to sit next to Val. "What are you doing here? I thought you were still in Toronto with Damian." Syena shook her head, a haunted expression flitting across her face. "Damian died," she whispered. "He.... there was nothing I could do. I got there too late to save him." She stopped talking, her face a mask of pain and anger. Val looked at her friend, her sister, wondering how she could help. There was nothing she could do, really. Only time could heal the wound, and time was something all vampires had in abundance. _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa... | Syena's POVShe hadn't realized how much she'd missed Val until she was back with the older girl. Val's common sense and level-headedness could always calm her, even when things seemed desperate. Val didn't do anything to dull the ache that was the loss of Damian, but being with her made it seem almost bearable. They passed the rest of the night in silence, neither moving or speaking, both lost in their own thoughts. For the first time since the accident, Syena thought of something other than Damian. Or, rather, she thought of something other than his death. The accident played a prominent role, of course, just as it always did, but she could think past the blood, so hard for her to resist, and the screams and the agony of separation to the times before, when they'd still been happy together. She'd even considered changing him so that she would be with him forever. They'd been about to decided when.... No. No, she couldn't think about it. Instead, she tried to force herself to change thoughts, only to find that morning had come and they were no longer alone. A little girl stood a little ways away, looking at the two of them with wide eyes. "Who are you?" she asked, coming a step closer. Syena looked at her, unable to comprehend the question. She wasn't close to fully functional and, for a moment, the child's question sounded as foreign as was possible. "What are you doing here?" That, Syena understood, but she didn't know how to answer. Thankfully, Val, clearly more awake than Syena, had something to say. "We're camping for the night. We'll go back to our house soon." "Where do you live?" "In the town." The girl nodded. "My Mommy's friend lives there," she informed the two. "Her name is Amanda Newton. Do you know her?" Val shook her head. "We just got here. We don't know anyone yet." "Oh. She's really nice." Before Val could answer, a male voice rang through the woods. "Claire? Claire, where are you?" "Embry! I'm over here!" Claire looked towards the voice, then back at Val and Syena. "That's Embry. He's my friend." Val nodded, then rose. "It was nice meeting you," she told Claire, "But we should go now." She made her way in the opposite direction from the voice. Syena followed, but not before she caught sight of a pair of brown eyes staring at her, and a tight mouth, very firmly not saying anything. _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa... | Syena's POVShe looked at the foreign vampire, not really seeing her for a moment. Only at Val's slight hiss of anger did she really notice the other girl. Even then, there didn't seem anything about her to warrant an explosion of Val's usually slow temper. "Do you know her?" Syena hissed in her friend's ear. Val shook her head. "Then what...?" Suddenly, Syena realized the new vampire girl wasn't alone. A wolf lounged against a wall, scowling fiercely and, like the other one she'd met, not saying anything. In fact, as far as Syena could tell, the wolves spent most of their time not saying anything. It seemed to be a favored hobby of theirs. _________________ My typing fingers are the portal to my soul --Samantha Cullen If you wanna scream, scream loudly --Lilly Cullen Friends don't put friends on their hitlists --yours truly Veni, Vidi, Visa...
