1. First sight
Syena looked around the school, her lip curling slightly as she took in the scene. She'd done Junior year far too many times now, and she was sick of it. Gone were the days when Syena Tower was the dunce drop out. Now, she was a straight A student who only managed to avoid being the teacher's pet by acting as sullen as possible.
"Cheer up," Val had ordered as they left their car. "Two more years to go."
"Yeah, this time around," Syena muttered. "But I'll have to do it again in a few years."
Val shrugged. "Such is the lot of the reborn," she intoned. "You have to pay for your second chances."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah... You're a senior this year. You have a reason to celebrate."
Val grinned and didn't answer, hopping out of the car instead and swinging the door shut. Still scowling, Syena followed suit. The two walked slowly into the building, noting as they did so that the Cullens were once again all there.
Syena eyed them, her eyes lingering momentarily on Edward, then sliding over to Jasper. Like all of them, he was gorgeous, and the slight aura of danger radiating from him just added to his allure.
“Don’t even go there,” Val warned.
“I’m not,” Syena assured her.
Val scowled at her. “Sure you’re not,” she agreed. “Don’t forget, I know you.”
Syena sighed. “He’s cute, that’s all. Don’t tell me you’ve never thought the same.”
“I’m less obvious about it.”
“Sure you are,” Syena agreed dryly. “That would explain why you haven’t been able to keep your mind off Alice ever since we got here.”
Val scowled. “I have not!” she hissed.
“Sure you haven’t,” Syena agreed, purposefully quoting her friend. “Don’t forget, I know you.”
“Don’t you dare say anything.”
“I won’t. Besides, it’s not like you’re going to do anything about it.”
“Damn right I’m not! Do you have any idea how many problems that would cause?”
“The same amount that I caused in Boston?”
“Possibly more.”
Syena winced. “Ouch. Then let us not go there. I like it here.”
“I do too,” Val agreed. “So let’s not blow it, shall we?”
Syena nodded and they slipped back into the crowd. Val headed off to English, and Syena made her way towards Chem. She really would rather not have taken Chem., but she’d heard the horror stories about Bio, and she’d decided that it wasn’t worth it. Far better to be bored than driven mad.
“Syena!”
Syena turned to see Madison, her best friend, running up to her. Madison was one of the few humans who still talked with Syena, and Syena found that she valued that. It got old sometimes to only talk to one person, even if that one person was Val. Syena would never forget the debt she owed the older girl, but there was no denying that Val tended to be both overprotective and overbearing. It was nice to forget about being a vampire and just act like a 16 year old girl again.
“Hey Madison.”
The redhead craned her neck to see Syena’s schedule. “I have Chem. now,” she announced.
Syena grinned. “Same. You wanna sit together?”
Madison nodded. She knew as well as Syena how few humans talked to her, and sitting with Syena was guaranteed to give her both space and respect. Syena knew that she liked that part almost as much as she liked Syena’s company.
They made it to the classroom early, giving them time to stake out the best desk for themselves. Syena noted in passing that the desk next to them was broken in one corner, and the jagged shape of the hole gave her a pretty good idea of what had happened. She shook her head slightly. None of the Cullens had much self-control when it came to destroying furniture, and whoever had sat in that desk was obviously no different. Her first thought was Emmett – he was certainly volatile enough to do it, and he’d taken Chem. last year – but she suddenly saw Jasper’s face. Yes, he could have done it.
Annoyed, she banished the image. She had no business thinking of Jasper Hale. He was happily married with Alice Cullen, and had been so for more years than his human form had been alive. It wasn’t like he was suddenly going to drop everything he’d built up over the past few years and go off to her. She wouldn’t take him even if he did. She had her orders.
Chem. passed quickly enough, the teacher doing nothing more than going over rules and expectations. Syena, who’d been though High School far too many times, paid as little attention as was possible without actively falling asleep. Not that she could have slept if she’d wanted to.
The bell rang at last, and Syena gathered her books, hoping the rest of the day wouldn’t be this dull and knowing it would be. The first day of school was always this bad, no matter where she went or what grade she did. It was one of the many tortures of being a vampire.
She and Madison parted ways, Syena heading towards English and Madison turning into the History room. Syena picked a spot well in the back, hoping she wouldn’t be noticed. She really would rather not have to deal with male teachers just now.
Just as the passing period ended, a girl breezed in, her dark hair fluttering slightly behind her. Syena froze, watching as the girl picked a seat in the front and center of the classroom. What was she doing?! Vampires didn’t draw attention to themselves, and Syena would bet everything she owned that this new girl was a vampire. She leaned forward slightly as class began, watching the girl. She hadn’t actually done anything yet, but Syena knew quite well that it was only a matter of time. She’d seen the color of the girl’s eyes, and the black-shot red didn’t bode well for anyone else in the classroom.
